The 8th edition of the summer school “Understanding the Middle East” critically unpacks power, politics and governance, exploring the role they have in re-defining the trajectories of Arab states.
The core idea of the Summer School is to deconstruct the imaginaries and stereotypes that have formed the representation of the Middle East as a result of the oft-inaccurate media coverage. Relying on previous cooperation agreements and consolidated research relationships, the international scientific committee of the “Understanding the Middle East” summer school met the challenge to organise a coherent and articulated programme that, in each annual edition, addresses one of the key issues related to the region. The chosen perspective grounded in Political Science. In this sense, political science is, however, understood in a broad sense: political philosophy, political sociology, and the history of thought, are all considered among others. At the same time, major attention is paid to methodological issues and, in particular, those relating to fieldwork.
The Summer School is the only school in Italy, and among the very few in Europe, offering a programme focused on the Middle East but with a politological perspective.
Cosa si intende esattamente con Medio Oriente? E come si è configurata l’attuale situazione geopolitica dell’area? This talk aims to interrogate, complicate, and extend the conceptualization of “the normalization of violence” in relation to the dynamic between Palestinian modes of life under Israeli modes of colonial domination, with reference to dimensions of the recent May 2021 Palestinian rebellion.
Today, Lebanon features one of the most severe economic crises in its history. Combined with the coronavirus pandemic and deepening political gridlock, the residents of the country are experiencing acute economic dislocation, political alienation, and daily hazards to their lives and wellbeing. The October 17 Revolution and August 4 Beirut Port explosion simultaneously—albeit different—reflected and added to the underlying features producing such crises. This panel aims to explore how the Lebanese media are dealing with this turmoil, shedding light on the framing of events based on political agendas.
The talk will examine one of the main agents of Turkish political theology, the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet). Professor Kocamaner will focus on religio-political infrastructures of the Diyanet and its role in the Bureaucratization of Islamic authority
